Chest support designed for recovery after open heart surgery € 125.00 EUR

QualiBreath is a patented chest harness that helps support the sternum and chest after open heart surgery, making coughing, deep breathing, movement, and early recovery feel more supported and manageable.

• Supports the chest and sternum day and night

• Extra support during coughing, deep breathing, sneezing, and movement

• Designed by a nurse for post-surgical recovery

• Supported by clinical evidence

Who it’s for
QualiBreath is designed for adults recovering from open heart surgery and other chest procedures involving the sternum or thorax. It is especially helpful for patients who need extra support during coughing, deep breathing, movement, and early recovery at home. If you are buying for a spouse, parent, or loved one, QualiBreath offers a more supportive and reassuring recovery solution than relying only on a pillow.
When to use
QualiBreath is typically used after sternotomy (surgical opening of the breast bone), especially during the first recovery weeks when coughing, breathing exercises, sneezing, and getting up or moving around can be painful. It is intended for day and night use for at least 8 weeks, or according to the physician’s recommendation.
Why it helps
After open heart surgery, many patients are told to support their chest with a pillow. While that can help in the moment, it is not always practical when support is needed quickly. QualiBreath provides continuous support around the chest and sternum, with integrated handles that allow the patient to increase support instantly during coughing, deep breathing, sneezing, straining, or movement.

Furthermore, it's demonstrated that stabilizing the chest reduces the risk of developing complications after surgery.

How QualiBreath supports recovery after open heart surgery

After open heart surgery and other chest procedures, coughing, deep breathing, sneezing, and even simple movement can be painful. Yet these are an important part of recovery. QualiBreath is a patented chest harness designed to help support the sternum, chest, and rib cage during this difficult period, so recovery feels more supported and manageable.

Its thorax-surrounding design provides continuous support day and night, while integrated handles allow the patient to increase support instantly when it is needed most, including during coughing, deep breathing, sneezing, straining, or getting moving again. This makes QualiBreath a more practical solution than relying only on a pillow for occasional support.

Designed by a nurse for post-surgical recovery, QualiBreath is intended to help reduce pain, support breathing, stabilize the sternum to minimize clicking and popping during movement, and lower the risk of complications associated with sternotomy recovery. It combines constant chest support with on-demand extra support in one wearable solution, helping patients feel more secure and more comfortable during the first weeks after surgery.

Reviews from Doctors and Surgeons:

The most appropriate product on the market
"I utilized a "Qualibreath" in the study and this is the most appropriate product on the market. It is adjustable, washable and has been shown to reduce the sternal gap on Ultrasound. The subjects in the study also rated it highly on a number of parameters."

My experience with the QualiBreath sternal support:
There are various access sites in cardiac surgery: minithoracotomy, ministernotomy, and complete sternotomy. Whenever a sternotomy is performed, it is important to evaluate whether it is appropriate to protect this incision with a sternal support postoperatively. In my opinion, it is indicated for obese patients, those with respiratory failure, diabetics, especially those who have undergone coronary artery bypass surgery using the mammary artery(s), heavy smokers, and repeat operations. In my experience, I have used the QualiBreath sternal supports (Advanced Sternal Binder) from Qualiteam, with excellent results. This support comes in various sizes; the material is porous and allows for good breathability. Drainage tubes do not hinder its insertion. Nursing staff can easily insert it. Many patients sometimes continue to wear the support even after the time we require.

Over all these years, this device has been used mainly (in about 2/3 of cases) with patients. It has the following advantages:

- Easy to wear, light, adjustable and therefore customizable to the morphology of each patient, well tolerated and supported by patients, including during their sleep.
- Effective in reducing pain (during coughing efforts, during mobilizations) and in the prevention of complications

Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about QualiBreath, sizing, use, care, and recovery support.

About QualiBreath

What is QualiBreath?

QualiBreath is an external sternum and thorax support for patients recovering after sternotomy and other chest procedures. It consists of an adjustable elastic band around the chest, integrated handles, and adjustable shoulder straps.

What does dual-functional support mean?

QualiBreath works in two ways. It provides constant support around the chest, and it includes integrated handles that allow the patient to increase support during coughing, sneezing, straining, movement, or breathing exercises.

Who should use QualiBreath?

QualiBreath is intended for patients after sternotomy procedures and may be especially useful for patients at higher risk of postoperative complications, such as patients with obesity, diabetes, osteoporosis, advanced age, chronic cough, COPD, or smoking history.

Is QualiBreath only for sternotomy patients?

No. QualiBreath may also help patients who experience chest discomfort or pain after other thoracic procedures or chest trauma. Always follow the advice of the treating healthcare professional.

Can women use QualiBreath?

Yes. QualiBreath can be used by women, especially patients with smaller breast sizes. Women with larger breast sizes may need a purpose-designed support bra with integrated sternum support, such as QualiBra Advanced.

Has QualiBreath been clinically evaluated?

Yes. QualiBreath has been evaluated for postoperative recovery criteria including pain, sternal separation, patient function, comfort, breathing, and exercise activities.

What QualiBreath does for the patient

What can QualiBreath do?

QualiBreath provides external support around the chest and sternum. It can help patients manage discomfort during breathing, coughing, movement, and recovery after surgery in the thoracic cavity.

Why is lateral sternum support needed?

After a sternotomy, the two halves of the sternum are held together internally with wires or plates. External support may help complement this internal closure by reducing lateral strain on the sternum.

Can QualiBreath provide firm support even though it is elastic?

Yes. QualiBreath uses a selected elastic material designed to provide firm support while maintaining comfort. Correct sizing and proper adjustment are important for the intended support.

Does QualiBreath restrict breathing?

No. QualiBreath is designed so that it does not cover the lower lung lobes or upper abdominal area. It supports the chest while allowing abdominal breathing and diaphragm movement.

Can QualiBreath help with pain?

QualiBreath may help reduce discomfort by supporting the ribs, sternum, and respiratory muscles during breathing, coughing, sneezing, and movement.

How does QualiBreath help during coughing, sneezing, or straining?

The patient can grasp the integrated handles and bring them together. This increases the circumferential chest support and helps counteract the increased pressure during coughing, sneezing, or straining.

Can QualiBreath help patients feel more secure?

Many patients feel reassured by continuous chest support. The handles also help patients manage coughing, breathing exercises, and movement more independently.

Why use QualiBreath early after surgery?

Early use gives external support to the sternum from the start of recovery. The treating healthcare team should decide when and how it is applied after surgery.

Sizing and measurement

How many QualiBreath sizes are available?

QualiBreath is available in multiple adult, pediatric, toddler, and infant sizes. Adult sizes include XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL, XXXL, and 4XL.

Why are there so many sizes?

Different sizes allow a better fit around the patient’s chest. Correct sizing helps position the shoulder straps and handles properly and improves comfort and support.

Is the width the same for all sizes?

No. Adult sizes are wider than pediatric, toddler, and infant sizes. The width is adapted to the patient group.

How should I measure for the correct size?

Measure the chest directly under the armpits and above the breasts. Then compare the measurement with the QualiBreath size guide before ordering.

How tight should QualiBreath be?

QualiBreath should be adjusted so it provides support without excessive pressure. Immediately after surgery, healthcare staff may start with a lighter closure and adjust it when the patient is awake and cooperative.

What if QualiBreath is fully tightened but does not give enough support?

The selected size may be too large. Check that the handles remain correctly positioned on each side of the sternum. If the fit is not correct, choose a smaller size.

Can I choose a size without a measuring tape?

A normal clothing or T-shirt size can be used only as a rough guide. For best fit, use a measuring tape and follow the size guide.

How to use QualiBreath

When should QualiBreath be placed on the patient?

In hospital use, QualiBreath is typically applied immediately after surgery by healthcare staff. Patients should follow the instructions of their treating team.

Should QualiBreath be worn under or over clothing?

QualiBreath is designed to be used directly on the skin. It can also be worn over clothing, provided there are no folds that could irritate the skin.

What is the correct position?

QualiBreath should be positioned as high as possible on the front of the chest and as high as comfortable on the back, without causing irritation under the arms.

Why is there no underarm cut-out?

An underarm cut-out would reduce the continuous encircling support around the chest. The full band height helps maintain the intended lateral sternum support.

What if QualiBreath bothers the patient under the arms?

Check the position and shoulder strap adjustment. If the straps are crossed at the back, uncrossing them may lower the back position. AxillaPads can also be used to help protect the underarm area.

Can patients put QualiBreath on by themselves?

Not immediately after surgery. It should initially be applied by healthcare staff. Later, when the patient is active and has learned safe movement, it can usually be positioned without help.

How do the handles work?

The patient places the thumbs under the handle folds on both sides of the sternum and closes the hands to bring the handles together. This increases chest support when needed.

When should the handles be used?

The handles should be used for extra support during coughing, sneezing, straining, deep breathing exercises, movement, or other painful situations.

Can the handles be used under clothing?

Yes. The handles can usually be grasped through shirts, T-shirts, or blouses, so QualiBreath can be worn discreetly under clothing.

Is the distance between the handles the same in all sizes?

No. The distance between the handles increases proportionally with larger QualiBreath sizes.

Can QualiBreath be used with drainage tubes?

Drainage tubes usually exit below the lower edge of QualiBreath. In some cases, depending on the patient’s build, the drains may pass under the elastic material.

Can QualiBreath be used in bed?

Yes. QualiBreath is designed to be used in bed and during daily movement, directly on the skin or under clothing.

Should QualiBreath be used during the day or at night?

QualiBreath is intended for day and night use for at least 8 weeks, or according to the physician’s recommendation.

Is QualiBreath warm to wear?

No. The material is ventilated to help the skin breathe.

Does QualiBreath increase perspiration?

Normally no. The material is ventilated. Patients with heavy underarm perspiration may use AxillaPads, which can be changed and washed as needed.

Can QualiBreath irritate the skin?

Skin irritation is unlikely when the product is positioned correctly. The seams and labels are on the outside, and the handles are integrated inside the material.

Is QualiBreath latex-free?

Yes. QualiBreath is free from natural rubber latex.

Is QualiBreath washable?

Yes. For longer elastic life, wash at 30°C / 86°F and do not tumble dry. Washing at 60°C / 140°F is possible, though it should be limited because repeated high-temperature washing can reduce elasticity.

Is QualiBreath only for hospital use?

No. QualiBreath is a one-patient product and should follow the patient home when continued use is needed after discharge.

QualiBreath and other support options

What are the advantages compared with other chest support products?

QualiBreath combines continuous chest support with integrated handles for extra support when needed. Many other supports provide only continuous support or only cough support.

Is a pillow an alternative to QualiBreath?

No. A pillow cannot provide continuous sternum support. It also needs to be held in place manually and may not be available immediately when the patient coughs, sneezes, or moves.
